Portland Head Light

Lighthouses are very common,
As seen along the coast of Maine,
But one is special in my heart,
This lighthouse is famous in name.

Along the shores of Fort William Park
You will find Portland Head Light,
Its home is Cape Elizabeth Maine,
A great landmark and busy tourist site.

Boats move slowly in and out of the harbor,
Surrounded by the spray of pure salt air,
I worked upon boats here for years,
Daily I saw this historical lighthouse's glare.

Portland Head Light majestically stands,
The surrounding areas are protected by her light.
Giving guidance to crews upon the ships,
A beacon welcomed by the ships in the dark of night.

January 10, 1791 a historic date to remember,
Seventy two feet tall from base to lantern deck,
Beamed a light from the 16 whale oil lamps,
Giving sight in darkness; preventing shipwrecks.

The height has grown twenty feet taller,
The museum houses a portion of a Fresnel lens,
In 1993 it was deeded back to Cape Elizabeth,
The fog signal and light tended by the USSCG since then.

Such a beautiful and historic lighthouse,
Holds memories cherished and dear to me,
One day working on the boats in the harbor,
The Presidential Family I happened to see.

The party was off in the far distance,
Surrounded by those giving protection,
Yet it gave me a deep sense of pride,
A page kept in my remembrance collection.
